“After all, if the trainer can't show you horses that have been retrained,
is it wise to have the individual work with your horse?” - Standardbred Horse Fan Club

Become a certified pacer retraining trainer Become a certified pacer retraining trainer or instructor.

Pacing retraining is not like training other horses. The pacing gait is usually the preferred gait with a horse that has raced and conventional training methods rarely work to train the horse not to pace and may in fact have the opposite effect of making a pacer pace even more erratically.

General Information for Certification

Becoming a certified Pacer Retraining Trainer (PRT) or a certified Pacer Retraining Instructor (PRI) is a specialty that is growing in demand with the popularity of the pacers as retrained riding companions or equestrian athletes particularly in the countries where pacers are raced (Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom).

The Standardbred Horse Fan Club receives many inquiries from owners searching for a qualified retraining trainer or instructor since many of the horses adopted from the pacer racetracks or rescues are often in need of several months of retraining to become riding horses that can trot and canter without the pacing.

Pacing retraining is not like training other horses. The pacing gait is usually the preferred gait with a horse that has raced and conventional training methods rarely work to train the horse not to pace and may in fact have the opposite effect of making a pacer pace even more erratically.

For Your Customers
By choosing a Trainer or Instructor from the Club's certified specialists, your customers will be assured that you are a competent and knowledgeable trainer in the specialty of pacer retraining (PRT) that the horse will learn the trot and canter without the pacing, and that you have the skills to teach riders in a lesson instruction format (PRI).

To meet the demand, the club has created a certification program for Pacer Retraining Trainers and Pacer Retraining Instructors.

Please see below for more information on becoming a certified Pacer Retraining Trainer (PRT) and a certified Pacer Retraining Instructor (PRI).

CERTIFIED PACER RETRAINING INSTRUCTOR (PRI) PROGRAM

The Pacer Retraining Instructor Certification (PRI) provides the expertise to instruct others who have adopted a pacer on how to ride and work with the pacer. PRI's must not only know how to retrain pacers, they must also be able to instruct the owner/rider on how to work with the horse and develop rider skill. PRI is an advanced certification specialty and only those providers with years of riding instruction (or similar qualifications) should attempt the certification.

PRI's are in high demand due to the special knowledge, experience and understanding required to instruct a rider and understand the retraining requirements of the pacer. PRI's are also invaluable for owners who want to learn to retrain their own pacer and become competent riders at the same time.
